 They were ATAPI, "ATA Packet Interface", which shortly, is a protocol 
layered on top of IDE, where short IDE data transfers (packets) initiated 
with IDE Read/Write commands carry actual commands and their responses 
communicated with the device (e.g. CD-ROM).  The commands and responses 
within those packets are actually as per the SCSI protocol.
