Oh of course. Sorry, I was thinking NVRAM clock, not overclocking the CPU. Yeah these machines are becoming pretty rare so I would probably not monkey around too much with board circuitry unless you have a bunch of spares laying around. I replaced the video socket on my color framebuffer and that was a challenge even with my Hakko de-soldering machine, but I ended up being successful with that.
Also be very careful with the plastic bezel as the plastic is becoming really fragile.

Sure, id be happy to offer any pointers - I'm still trying to figure this beast out as well though and haven't installed SunOS on it yet. Tape installs are pretty hard these days with the inventory of good tapes. And this machine doesn't boot from CDrom. I happen to have a Copy of SunOS 4.1.4 for Sun3 on CD but its useless for booting this machine. I have to figure out some kind of net boot tactic. I know the info is out there but haven't had the time to dive into it. Are you aware of the Sun3 Archive? https://www.sun3arc.org/

-Kurt

On Sun, Apr 24, 2022 at 12:10 PM Dan Moisa <dmoisa@gmail.com> wrote:

Meaning put in a faster oscillator. This worked in the 3/60 since
every subsystem (serial, etc) is on it's own clock - works well at
25mhz with a 50mhz main oscillator for example.
I don't have the schematics for the 3/80, but I see a main oscillator
around 39Mhz and a bunch of other crystals spread around, so it might
be the same. I'll take it out/socket it and try it out, but I wanna be
extra careful given how hard it was to obtain this in the first place.

@Kurt I'd love to get more pointers from you!
@Dave Gmail is my price to pay for not wanting to complicate my life,
at least they stopped changing the UI every year.
Thanks,
