<div dir="ltr">I mean, there is no "practical" reason to run an SGI box - you can buy a $200 laptop with 4GB RAM, put FreeBSD on it and use it for all kinds of networking, routing, and programming etc. purposes, and it will run rings around the SGI box in terms of performance for well under 35W continuous.<div><br></div><div>However running SGI with IRIX would let you see how things used to be, and see how the IRIX developers solved issues with the X11 window manager etc. in a way that is different from today's much more bloated GNOME desktops. Speaking personally:<br>

Why? Because IRIX is closed source.<br>
<br>
Of course, the hardware analog (undocumented hardware) would make me<br>
prefer an opener machine than an SGI to begin with. I have used<br>
machines with undocumented hardware - but I prefer to ignore the<br>
undocumented hardware rather than use closed software to access it.<br>
