[SPARCbook] audio trouble

A friend of mine bought one of the Ross Pennington 3GXs.  He has a problem
where on bootup there is a message "dbri: SpeakerBox unplugged" and audio
doesn't work.  In fact, if you cat a .au to /dev/audio, the machine just
hangs.  He's running Solaris 2.6 3/98 with the Sun recommended patch
cluster, all the Tadpole pkgs, and the Tadpole patches.  I have a more or
less identical setup to him, and have run into no such problem.  Any ideas
for helping him?
