You can get *nice* 12V AC power supplies by looking at ham equipment
catalogs - I have a "Samlex" 12V (actually, 13.8V, which is what car
electrical systems actually put out) AC-to-DC power supply rated for
23 amps continuous, that I got for $100 at a local ham shop (Austin
Amateur Radio, www.aaradio.com).  Its meant to run equipment that normally
would want a car's electrical system, of course (I run a Yaesu FT-1500M
2 meter transceiver off of it), but you can hook anything you want up to
the positive/negative terminals in back....

Other places to look for power supplies:

(I'd say a good 75% of ham radio equipment is designed to run off of 
12 or 13.8VDC)
