[SunHELP] verify tar ?

Is it possible to verify the contents of a tar (e.g. on a tape)
without trying to restore all data? The "-t" option of tar (SunOS 5.6)
only lists tar directory entries but doesn't confirm file checksums etc.
Even GNUtar doesn't offer such an option.
I've been told that SunOS 4.1.4's tar reported an error if the last file
in the archive was incomplete...

Ideas?
