[SunHELP] 8-bit TCX?

Today when I was browsing through the online manuals, I found this in
tcx(7D):

"    There is an 8-bit only version of  tcx  which  operates  the
     same  as  the 24-bit version, except that the 24-bit-related
     mappings can not be made."

What is the TCX?
All I see is "tcx - 24-bit SBus color memory frame buffer", but I recall
the TCX to be the onboard 8-bit framebuffer on the SS4, and the SS5 had
the AFX-bus 24-bit card.
