Which is along the lines of 3/4 million USD.

Yow.  I don't know what to say to that.  It's obscene, compared to what 
you would get in North Carolina (USA).  More densely populated parts of 
the US are probably similar though.  For example, getting five acres 
within 20 miles of Philadelphia with a house on it will likely be in 
the same ballpark.  That's a small part of why I left that area.

But there are still huge tracts of undeveloped land in North America.  
If you can manage to get by without being near a city, there are still 
places where you can get good  land for around $500/acre (~UKP320).  
East of the Appalachians you can get in for $1,000 to $2,000 (~ UKP640 
to UKP1280) if you get away a reasonable distance from metro areas.  
You can probably do even better in Canada, though I could never 
tolerate the winters there (my nordic heritage has gone on permanent 
vacation).
