aren't the latest '911s' known to the cognoscenti as 998s? how much
besides general layout do they really share with the original 911?

the original land rover lasted a good long time too.

as a nameplate but not really a single model. closest would be the
irs chassis that lasted from '63 to '82. of course, this applies to
the 911 and golf also. one might as easily count the lincoln
continental and cadillac fleetwood as long running names.
a couple of jeeps:
xj cherokee: 1984 - 2001 and afaik still on at beijing jeep
cj5: 1955 - 1986 and one could argue it really started with the
willys mb of ww2... come to think of it, mahindra is still making cj3
derivatives.
