It occurred to me that I have a spare HP DL360.  So I pulled the boot 
SSDs from the X4540 and plugged them into the DL360.  I learned several 
things from this:

1.  I can boot as far as the grub menu.
2.  The live Solaris 11.3 installed image appears to be hosed.  DESPITE 
being carefully cleanly shut down.

I'm endeavoring to see whether I can repair the boot pool.
