Not research maybe, but they've always been innovators in developement.

The cutest (female) Texan I ever met was an electronics engineer working
on bus design for Compaq.

Funny thing was they didn't really have to buy DEC at this late stage.

Compaq seemed to be doing just fine at both ends of the spectrum.

DEC may have been better off on its own, even though it did seem to be
shooting itself in both feet at the same time even more regularly than
ever before.
