[rescue] Forget flying piggies.... how about a scanner on a sun?

It should work fine.  I've run MicroTek Scanmaker IIsps on my Indigo2 
for a while with SANE.  your scanjet is listed as a beta driver but 
then again so is my microtek and I had very few problems with it.
