[rescue] External drives on an X4540

Problem solved by swapping back to my *original* SAS controller, an LSI
9212-4i4e.  There were two problems:  my *original* SAS cable wouldn't
work because it's a single-lane cable, and the *replacement* controller
I bought because I didn't know that single-lane vs. multi-lane SAS
cables were a thing turns out to have a fault that locks up the driver
if connected to the external chassis using a multilane cable (yet works
OK with a single-lane cable).
