So on to the next part of the problem:  deciding on formats and
filesystems.  The plan here is to use disks in that external chassis in
rotation, copying a currently-roughly-1.6TB backup file to an external
disk after each full backup cycle, then storing that drive offline.  My
plan was to use 2TB disks once I had the chassis working, but I do have
a bunch of spare 1TB disks that I could use on a temporary basis (but
would have to RAID them).

What filesystem would you use?  Any reason not to just use ZFS?
