Hi John-Paul,
I too suspect something like this. At your suggestion I looked at /etc/papersize. It is set to letter.
I need to try every possible combination to see if there is an a4 default somewhere in the systme that I'm not catching.
I have been looking at the headers in the spool files which I assume are frontends concocted by Cups, or by thee editor. they seem all the same wther the file prints properly or not.
very vexing.
Thanks for your thoughts,
john ferguson

Check paper size settings. I've seen similar problems when printing to
US Letter (8.5" x 11") paper with software that was configured for the
slightly narrower but taller A4 size.
I suspect that LibreOffice is correctly configured to match the actual
paper size of your printer and overriding the system-wide default, while
GEdit is simply using the default paper size which might be incorrectly
set. Since you're using Ubuntu, check the /etc/papersize file and make
sure it matches what you're using. I've seen Debian (and derivatives
such as Ubuntu) default to European "A4" when I actually use "letter".
