That would only be on the 1064/1068 family of SAS chipsets (first
generation LSI, 3 Gb/s), and only apply to SATA drives; SAS drives are
fine with newer firmwares in IT mode

tb-in-capacity-with-lsi-sas-hbas>,
IT is more useful for e.g. ZFS).
The 2008 and successors should be fine for larger drives both SAS and SATA.
