Good description!

It's that but it can freely intermix Solaris containers, Linux
containers, and VMs (containing pretty much anything) on the same OS.
I interviewed one of their engineers once. Nifty product although I
personally have no use for it. My home VMware server's been in bits
for 2 house moves now because I don't really have any use for that,
either -- I just wanted to get to know it a bit for a possible project
that didn't pan out in the end.

I do feel there's room for someone to do a 100% FOSS, pure-play,
"VMware based on Linux". The closest I know of is Proxmox but it seems
to be quite substantially more complicated.
