I've got a Sun using a SCSI<->SATA bridge right now. At the moment I'm
using an external enclosure, but there's no need for that; a laptop
SATA drive plus the bridge adds up smaller than the desktop-size drives
the internal bays are designed for. The only issue I see is physical
mounting; mounting a laptop drive plus the bridge on an internal drive
sled strikes me as difficult unless you introduce something like a
piece of sheet metal which you mount the drive to (with laptop-spacing
mounting holes) and then mount on the drive sled (with desktop-spacing
mounting holes).
I've got two such bridges. They are, however, Acard 7730A bridges -
not recent work. But they _are_ evidence that it is totally possible
to build a bridge for putting SATA drives on a SCSI bus that doesn't
require external enclosures for a machine with internal bays sized for
desktop form-factor drives.
