I've seen cases that take 6x 1.6" high drives, and I seem to recall ones that took more 1" drives, not not positive.
Once upon a time I wanted to take out the SCSI backplane and replace it with a port multiplier and SATA drives with an eSATA interconnect, but I never got it all together...
As for SCSI there were too many flavors for me to keep straight - narrow, wide, fast, ultra-fast, differential, high-voltage, etc.
My experience was (intentionally) limited to narrow (sun4c) and SCA (early UltraSPARC) - good luck!
