Me too - but, with one exception, my experience has been that they are
compatible, in the sense that you need nothing but at most passive
adapters to put a device of type A and a device of type B on the same
bus.  (In some practical cases the adapters may not be strictly
passive, such as wide<->narrow adapters that automatically
active-terminate the high half.  But it's not _necessary_ that the
adapter be non-passive, just convenient.)

That exception is that high-voltage differential is not compatible with
either single-ended or low-voltage differential.  (There are probably
others I haven't run into, such as the issue mentioned upthread where
the internal bus is not capable of reliable ultra-speed operation.)

And, of course, this is all just my experience.  There are likely
exceptions I just haven't met.
