I can hardly claim to be representative of much, but *I* certainly use
it routinely.  It's one reason I've never even glanced at Wayland: one
of the things they threw out was, apparently, network remoteness.

Not that I'm all that great a fan of X.  It's just the best alternative
I'm aware of, for my use cases.  (For example, from the little I know
of it, Display PostScript is technically better - but, as I understand
it, there were no open-source implementations, which pretty much killed
it, going up against X.
