There is a part of me that wants to defy that challenge and buy the 
lasers and wire bonding machines needed to work around this.

Then I wonder why I have to spend so much time convincing my son that we 
should, for instance, get a new bathroom door instead of paying to have 
the old one taken out, all the holes repair, cut insets for modern 
hinges, sand it, prime it, repaint it, then have similar treatment done 
to the frame that hangs it, and then have it reassembled, versus 
spending less than $200 on a new one as part of a larger bathroom repair.
