Remember IBM and Moto were pretty thick over the years. Moto created MECL
(Motorola ECL for IBM for System 360) in the mid-1960s.

After he had moved to IBM ("Jerktown" as he called it), Nick and the IBM
team later relaid out the chip t create the u370:

When I was a grad student @ UCB (where he was giving away thew above swag),
Nick said that IBM had two metal layers in their process which was why it
was faster that original 68000. IIRC Moto got the IBM process for the
68020 and I >>think<< they used a common process for the PPC.
