[rescue] Ultra 1 boot from install CD fails

As dumb as it sounds, I have actually burned CD's at single or double speed only, not allowing the OS to go faster, and then had the CDR I burned work.

If you have enough CDRs you could try that!

Cordially

Same result. It sounded like such a promising idea too! Thx for the suggestion.

Wondering if you need a “boot -vr” since it’s not rebuilding the device tree?

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, the boot -v the only reason I know the last thing that prints out is "using default device instance data”. If you don’t use the -v you don’t see that message.

I’ve done it with drag-switch true and false. I’ve watched the serial port for any other messages as well.

Hello,

Back in the chain of replies, i think someone asked if you'd "booted the
machine with the diag-switch" but i didn't see a reply.

That's explained a bit on page number 37 "Controlling Power-on Self-test"
of this:

https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19457-01/801-7042/801-7042.pdf

(Which counting from the start of the PDF is the 57th page.)

"boot -v" might also reveal some more details around where it's hanging?

best, johan

The CD that im using were burned at home. Same for the NetBSD CD that works

fine. The Iso files im using on Zulu have been used many times on my other

Sun Workstations (all 32bit). Just to check I redownloaded another iso.

Same thing. It’s 100% repeatable and always at exactly the same point be it

2.7 or 7. Very strange.

Are you using a Sun or home burned CD? I have had odd failures like

this with a bad burn of an ISO.

Agree that NetBSD is ignoring something that Solaris is

not. I feel like the last message in the boot before it

hangs is a clue,

"using default device instance data†

Im not exactly sure what that means so I reset the IDProm

and reprogrammed it using 80 as the machine type but no

luck. Im not even completely sure that “default device

instance data†is what is stored in there but some google

searches seem to be tied to that. Â

NetBSD boot seems completely normal with no warnings or

messages I would not expect. Â

I’ve moved all the sims around and removed different sets

and like clockwork it always hangs at the same place so im

pretty sure its not a memory issue.

Im down to just the CDROM drive or just the Zulu to take

everything else off the SCSI bus. It’s a head

scratcher.

Thanks for the reply!

Apologies for asking the likely obvious - have

you booted this machine with diag-switch and let

it run through the tests ?

Since you have tried real CDs as well as ZuluSCSI

virtual, it sounds like perhaps something that

Solaris is “touching†that NetBSD is not ?

Have you actually tried to follow all the way

through and install/run NetBSD ?

I guess a hail mary would be to start removing

hardware and components one by one and try a

Solaris boot after each step.

Sorry for the obvious things, just wanted to

reply with what I would try. Â

Please do let us know if you make progress or

figure out the root cause.
