That sounds like a valid fundamental difference between how 10Base5 and 
10Base2 was installed.

I wonder if 10Base2 would have been different if it was also run through 
the ceiling instead of along the floor.

You would obviously still need the ""service drop loop to come down to 
the machine, through the T connected to the machine, and go back up. 
But that's probably similar to what an AUI cable would do.

Though an AUI cable cut would mean that only that station was impacted 
while cutting the loop of 10Base2 coming out of the ceiling would split 
the network in half and leave both halves improperly terminated.
