Thanks, I did check /etc/defaultrouter and it was fine.
network
It was a weird error. Everything partially worked, but the Mac address on the network card (a qfe) was getting forced to all zeros, hence the network traffic was not received.
The NVRAM actually didn't report an error, clock was working fine, and the Mac address looked ok but somehow it was corrupted.
Resetting the values in the normal way did the trick. I should just do that by default on any machine :-)
