Ibve figured it outbit was definitely the NFS, IP, or Intel Ethernet
driver issue thatbs cited in the NFS FAQ at
<http://www.sunhelp.org/faq/nfs.html <http://www.sunhelp.org/faq/nfs.html>>

I netbooted the Sun-4/110 back into SunOS 4.1.1, used that to manually
install (per the administrator FAQ) SunOS 4.1.4 and some patches onto a spare
SCSI disk, booted from the SCSI disk, and then used that system to apply
patches 102394-05, 102516-06, 103058-01, and 103275-01, and build a new
kernel.

After copying that new kernel to my netboot server and disconnecting the SCSI
disk, I can netboot a perfectly stable SunOS 4.1.4 on my Sun-4/110!

Next up is to reapply the patches to the netbooted system, and *also* to apply
all the Y2K patches.

I really wish Sun had released a SunOS 4.1.4U1 (or bSolaris 1.1.3b if they
insisted on the new naming) with all of the major patches applied, so there
was a final, usable, properly-configured system.

Though the way the SunOS CD-ROM distribution is set upbjust a bunch of
tarballs in a particular directory hierarchybI suppose the community could
put that together too these days.
