" I really wish Sun had released a SunOS 4.1.4U1 (or "Solaris 1.1.3" if they
" insisted on the new naming) with all of the major patches applied, so there
" was a final, usable, properly-configured system.

hear, hear! though i'd go for *all patches*

" Though the way the SunOS CD-ROM distribution is set up-just a bunch of
" tarballs in a particular directory hierarchy-I suppose the community could
" put that together too these days.

hmmm...

brings me back to the days when i managed a herd of sunos4 machines.
i made some sparse patch trees - kern, openwin, *everything else* -
that i could rdist to bulk-patch the lot of them. the only patch i
had trouble with was rdist itself - had to make that a special case.

i also wrote a kernel tuner script which reset disk paging i/o based
on actual ram and spindle speed, and shut swapping off so that the
kernel relied solely on the more efficient paging, based on an article
in the dec '93 sun performance overview. it was fun to run it on a
busy server and watch the results on a perfmeter. i still have it,
somewhere...

btw for those of you who like and prefer ksh like i do, i can tell you
that ksh88 builds straight up on sunos4 - not by accident. always in
my personal toolkit...
