[SunHELP] Assembler Error with stock cc/as on SunOS 4.1.1 on Sun-3/60 (diskless)

I can't seem to compile even trivial code on my diskless Sun-3/60 running
SunOS 4.1.1:

    ferrari % cc hello.c -o hello
    as: Assembler Error-- write error on file hello.o%ferrari

Is this a known issue for which I just need to apply a patch or something?
Right now I'm running stock SunOS 4.1.1, I haven't updated to 4.1.1_U1 or
applied any other patches yet.

Stock SunOS 4.1.1 on my Sun-4/110 didn't have this issue, which is part of
what perplexes me. I'd expect the behavior to be mostly the same...
