They are. The latter is closer to what I want. I am already running
all relevant services (such as DNS and mail) myself; the only thing I
was looking for is domain registration without requiring me to jump
through Web hoops - or, if there's anyone suitable and willing, a
subdomain delegated to me.

However, it's more like, needing to avoid, not just wanting to - though
I suppose the line between need and want is a bit fuzzy. In
particular, I neither have nor want HTTPS support, which makes most Web
interfaces unusable - even if I considered them suitable for the task,
which I don't.

Since I wrote the first email, it looks as though all the obstacles I'm
currently aware of have been cleared, so I now expect I'll end up
keeping rodents-montreal.org.

I'm not entirely clear.

Company DEF (to reuse my previous mail's blinding of the exact
companies involved) says that, as of August 3rd, they will no longer be
willing to function as registrar (reseller) for my domain. I do not
know what would happen to it if I didn't move it away before that; I
suspect it would be released, or go into some kind of "deletion rescue"
hold, or some such.

The registration had roughly a year to run before the transfer. My
understanding is that company GHI will extend the registration by one
year as part of doing the transfer. So, depending on how you measure,
there should be roughly either one or two years to go.

They are.

Because I do not like registrar privacy.  I think it should not exist;
I believe that holding a slice of the domain name space should be like
owning land: inherent in that should be identifiability and
contactability. I am not willing to stay under such an umbrella.

They would help in some respects, but I don't consider them
substitutes.
