You know the big OEMs all make private label 1u servers, right? I seriously doubt Sun started with a blank page and designed their 1u x86 servers 'from scratch'.
They might have, but since they viewed them as commodity boxes, I tend to think they 'tweaked' an existing board, wrote drivers (as needed) for integrated subsystems and hoped to cash in on high margins and consulting services.
