Hi

As mentioned there is a micro switch which is activated by the side panel. You
can use a screwdriver to activate it with the side off to test it as sometimes
the switch comes loose or the prong on the panel gets bent or broken.

As to memory, I seem to remember there were third party 2Gb sticks which would
give you up to 16Gb, or 12Gn if you used a mixture of Sun 1Gb and third party
2Gb.
